Milestones Completed
The lecturers have been highly appreciated over several years by the results of the National Student Survey. If we raise the bar to 4.5 on a 5-point scale (the green cells), three qualities clearly stand out: knowledge of professional practice, fostering an environment in which questions can be asked, and conveying the teaching material clearly in English. In the MBA Alumni Survey held in December 2023, Quality of Staff scored on average 4.3 on 5-point scale.
NSE Student Survey, 5-point scale
“The lecturers were very dedicated and explained the content very well which was always aligned with the respective subject exam”. Matthias Frömmel 2021
Lecturer: Student ratio
Work by Lecturers | Hours invested |
Lecturers EC courses (Block I – IV) | 1363 |
Lecturers / Facilitators Curriculum Extra | 304 |
Thesis Coaching (Block V) | 300 |
Total | 1967 |
FTE (# hours / 1659) | 1.185 (net, 1.481 gross) |
Programme Director (3.5 days) | 1161 |
Programme Coordinator (1.5 days) | 498 |
Total | 1659 |
FTE (# hours / 1659) | 1.0 |
Considering the above, the lecturer: student ratio is 1:13.5 is very favourable considering the average ratio in Higher Education (being 1:20 in 2020). As a starting point we take:
The average number of students is 20
Lecturers are appointed for education related work only, which we call 'net' FTE and would be approximately 80% of a normal position of a lecturer (gross)
Programme management is deeply involved in the day-to-day organisation and execution of the programme, doing all the communication with all the stakeholders involved, guidance and counselling of the students, executing the quality assurance activities, organising the extracurricular courses, field trips and guest lectures as well as the scheduling, assessment organisation, marketing and recruitment activities as well as all activities concerning handling the applications.
For the last 4 years the composition of the lecturer team has been stable (for details, see MBA staff overview). Over the years, the experienced programme staff of the MBA have shown that they are well qualified to teach and organise the programme. Many lecturers also actively particate in business (master) programmes of other universities and/or have a professional relationship with the service industry as a consultant or subject matter expert. Next to that, industry representatives are strongly represented and active in the programme. Over the last few years, more colleagues of the HTH Bachelor programme share their knowledge and experience with the MBA students, especially in the form of guest lectures and Curriculum Extra courses. Also, the first alumni of the MBA come back to the campus to reflect on their journey after graduation and to share their professional insights on business topics, themes and trends.
Enhancing Staff Performance and Alignment
Over the past 10 years, several changes have been made to improve the quality of the team of lectures concerning the following courses: Hospitality Audit, Digital Technology, Business Strategy, Business Research and Consultancy report and Hospitality Experience Design. For the final thesis team, in addition to the MBA lecturers, more HTH lecturers have been involved.
With the current team, a calibration session has been organised to improve the alignment of the most recent grading rubric of the final thesis. The MBA programme management team plays a role in connecting course owners with each other in case there is a (potential) subject overlap, which hardly happens, due to the character of the MBA and its courses, that all focus on different domains and perspectives of creating sustainable service excellent organisations.
The experiences of finding a lecturer replacement have been positive so far. The school’s brand name is strong, and its brand reputation attracts the desired talented business and educational professionals. Hotelschool The Hague has quite an extensive group of lecturers and researchers with the right academic and subject matter expert profile who support the MBA programme.
Furthermore, HTH is part of extensive networks which facilitate finding new and well qualified colleagues; to name a few:
the Global Hotel Schools of Distinction initiative which is a collective of universities focusing on (international) Hospitality.
the carousel of Dutch Hotel Management schools that work together on various national (hospitality) frameworks.
the International Centre of Excellence in Tourism and Hospitality Education, the network THE-ICE.
Universities such as Erasmus University Rotterdam, University of Amsterdam and Nyenrode Business University through its (HTH) in-house pre-master programme
Last but not least, the expertise and support of the HR department of Hotelschool The Hague in the process of finding the right professional(s) is a decisive factor.
